Irlen Syndrome Diagnosotics In Northridge, CA
What is Irlen Syndrome?
Irlen Syndrome is a hereditary, visual-perceptual problem that prevents an estimated 14-18% of the population from being able to read efficiently. Irlen Syndrome is not a vision problem of the eye. Irlen Syndrome is the visual-perceptual reception site of the brain perceiving the timing of light waves ineffectively. The disorder remains undetected by standard educational, visual, and medical tests.
Individuals with Irlen Syndrome perceive the printed page and sometimes their environment differently. Unlike those without the disorder, reading becomes more difficult over time and physically exhausting. Also, it can affect attention span, listening, energy level, motivation, and work production.
Others may view individuals with Irlen Syndrome as underachievers or as having behavioral, attitudinal, or motivational problems. Irlen Syndrome often coexists with other learning difficulties and should not be held in isolation as the only existing problem. Some people already diagnosed with learning difficulties may be suffering from Irlen Syndrome in addition. More importantly, it should be stressed that the treatment for Irlen Syndrome is not a cure-all but rather a piece of the puzzle for the individual.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Color alters the timing in which the person receives and processes much like photographers use colored filters for various effects ( Yellen-Schweller Effect ) . The patented Irlen Treatment Method uses precision-tinted filters, worn as glasses, to reduce visual-perceptual difficulties and light sensitivity.
The evaluator performs an initial screening to determine whether or not the individual is suffering from Irlen Syndrome. The assessment includes the use of colored overlays versus white pages to assess possible improvements. If the evaluator determines that the individual has Irlen Syndrome, a full diagnostic tint evaluation is recommended.
The diagnostic assessment is an in-depth evaluation to determine the most beneficial color. After determining the specific tint, the Irlen laboratory utilizes a computerized spectrophotometer to place the exact tint on the lenses.
Positive results obtained from the use of Irlen Lenses™ may include: improved reading accuracy; better comprehension; increased reading speed; increased productivity; reduced strain and fatigue; improved academic and work performance; and reduction of visually- induced headaches and migraines.

Incredible help for my son
We have had a tough time figuring out what was going on with our son. He is a very smart kid, but in the 3rd grade was reading at the first grade level. We are at the tail end of a very in depth analysis by Yellen & Associates. So far, they found 1 issue to be Irlen Syndrome. With special filters, his reading fluency has improved dramatically. We wlook forward to seeing what the rest of the analysis shows, and how we can further help our son. I would recommend them to anyone with a child that is having issues, to help develop a game plan to helping them succeed. On a side note, they are very nice!
Accessible and helpful for the whole family
Dr. Yellen has helped our family for the last 6 years. With teenagers, I was in need of much guidance. Dr. Yellen was also able to counsel my teenage daughter to help her with her problems. But it has been my son who has benefited most from working with Dr. Yellen. He felt out of control and depressed, but Dr. Yellen was able to recognize quickly that my son had a learning disability that we had not considered. Through some extensive testing, Dr. Yellen's assessment gave my son very needed accommodations to help him with school. He also gained more confidence through his understanding of his disability. My family continues to reach out to Dr. Yellen as needed. He is always there for us.
Diversity of Education
The Yellens have a deep understanding and true concern for the welfare of how education has lost it's diversity for children and how different they learn. Educational therapy and advocacy is what stands between the eduational system we have today and the future of children tomorrow. The Yellen's expertise opened up avenues for my son I would have never known existed. We are on the right path and have the Yellens for support for the next road ahead. Thank you for everything.
Kind and very thorough
I first met Dr. Yellen when my son was diagnosed with Irlen Syndrome. It's hard to find people who know about this condition. Dr. Yellen can both diagnose it and prescribe for it. We brought our second son in for different issues because of the trust we had in him by then. His wife Heidi is equally professional and kind. Both obviously enjoy working with children. Their services are more comprehensive and thus more expensive than some, but we felt we were in good hands.
above and beyond commitment
My son was recommended for a decompression and psychological therapy about a year ago. He's now 12 going on 13 and his interaction with Yellen & associates has had a tremendous impact on our son's every day life. Dr. Andrew Yellen was in charge of his psychological therapy and a few months later Mrs. Heidi Yellen stepped in and was shocked to know that he was under performing academically. Mrs. Heidi Yellen will be working with our son over the summer to engage him in academical activities that will sharpen his skills and bring him to a level of education that his school, unfortunately would have not accomplished! We are grateful to be working with a power couple in their respective fields, their commitment to not only our son but my family as a whole is above and beyond. Again thank you both! Best wishes, Lazaro & Mayra
